Superfood Uncovered - Kefir

Posted by Ben Simpkins on July 18, 2017

Kefir, pronounced Kee – Fur, is a tangy yoghurt drink that is full of probiotic benefits for your stomach and digestion along with lots of other nutrients. It can be made from multiple liquid sources including milk, water and coconut water.

Kefir is made by adding the kefir grains to the liquid and then allowing to sit and ferment for at least 24 hours, after this time period the grains are strained and then added to a new batch of liquid to create more. This cycle can be continued indefinitely.

You can do this process at home but it can cause illness if you get the process wrong so it is easier to just purchase from a trusted supplier.

In one portion of kefir not only do you get a big hit of probiotic goodness for your stomach, It will include up to 30 good strains of good bacteria in one portion but you will also get protein, calcium, phosphorus, vitamin B12 + B2, magnesium and a hit of Vitamin D too.

Benefits of Kefir

Kefir has had some research on a multiple number of areas regarding health and fitness but some of its key gains are the probiotic bacteria that can help aid digestion and improve the balance within the gut and also help improve bone density which is vital in women.

The fermentation process has been shown to help break down the lactose in milk so it could well be tolerable for someone who suffers from lactose intolerance, although another fantastic option is water kefir. It is slightly different from the normal type but it could be a great alternative if your body doesn’t agree with the regular type.

Best place to get it?

If you don’t know by now, I am a huge Leon fan, and they serve a couple of incredible ones, but you can also find kefir in the supermarkets so keep an eye out for it as it normally comes in a bottle.
